Sad to say but it is unlikely that we will be successful trying to prevent this legislation or other bad legislation. Particularly given the MPAA/RIAA's deep pockets. So if we are waiting/hoping for a legislative victory to save the day we are going to be disappointed. On the other hand there is one means of redress that, if adopted, will carry the day: a boycott. The money the MPAA/RIAA uses to promote bad legislation comes directly from the consumers. Thus we have the power to choke off their funding and their influence with congress simply by refusing to consume the product. Buying un-DRM'd music is a good start. Refusing to purchase DRM'd material is another. Boycotting the companies that use DRM -even just a little- altogether would be an awesome start. I might suggest targeting a particular company to start (a blanket boycott of all media probably wouldn't catch on): say a 90 day boycott of company X (right in the middle of summer blockbuster season). In short, stop funding the opposition...

[...] Watch as governments lick the boots of the Entertainment Industry! Marvel at the Destruction of Personal Rights!! Gasp at the Idiocy of Those in Power!!! The U.S. is exporting to the rest of the world a level of naked, sweaty terror about piracy that goes beyond legitimate concerns about, say, massive counterfeiting operations or phony prescription drugs, and truly does threaten the individual rights of consumers and their media. And they’ve now convinced other countries to plot some secret worldwide agreement that will potentially judge all of us as criminals without any sort of trial and without our input at all. That’s unacceptable. (Link) [...]

Just listened to this as well on BOL.

Amid the hysteria that can; and should; surround this pathetic attempt at stopping people doing anything at anytime anywhere. Let's be pragmatic about the practicalities of enforcing it.

This culture of overtly anal copyright protection or sudo-consumer aimed terrorism(!) can only be policed so far, surely?!? We have seen unacceptably increased traffic disruption in airports and ferry terminals as it is - and that is for something legitimately a concern, terrorism.

Where will the extra time and effort come in to go through your laptop / PMP / phone / flash drives etc etc... No way on earth will they be able to keep tabs on everything, even if they wanted to. But, what about the ISP's - they must be laughing all the way to the server farm, if the government gives them legit cause to sniff packets, data monitor and snoop - then where will it end.

There is only one phrase that admonishes me from copyright infringement in my book [sic] "The Culture of Ownership"...

"I paid for it so, I own it now, so up yours!!"

I have to tell you, this is really freaking me out.

I too am telling my member of parliament (I'm Canadian what can I say), friends, family and anyone I can think of to get the word out.

I don't know which is worse - what they are trying to do, or the secrecy... It's all just scary.

When are they going to figure out that most of the worlds citizens are not pirates, this is going to cause nothing but problems.

Who would pay for my Macbook Pro if they decided all my iTunes purchases were illegal?

Or my ipod?

Or, or....

And since when can OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS do stuff like this in secret!

Ok I'll stop now - just wanted to second that everyone get the word out.
